    About us

Walking into Thomas Dunton Solicitors, a thriving, dynamic legal practice with over 40 staff, you would be hard pushed to imagine its remarkable beginning. Norman Thomas Dunton grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in Hackney, East London. He left school at 14 and started working in a solicitors firm as an office boy. After returning from service in World War 2, he found work at the city law firm of Simmons & Simmons. One day in 1962 he decided to train as a solicitor… He was 49. With a wife and a young family to support, college wasn’t an option, so he enrolled on a correspondence course and studied after work and at home in the evenings, emerging as a fully qualified Solicitor six years later.

Thomas Dunton was officially born in 1978 when Norman was 65, an age when most people are retired. He practiced from home for several years, taking on partner Andrew Hinchey, and then when his daughter Melanie joined the firm, taking a small office in the building, which with the current Partners and staff the firm has expanded to fill.

A man with a deeply felt social conscience, he once said that among his greatest pleasures in life was seeing someone walk in through the door weighed down with a problem knowing that he was able to help them.

This ethos is still very much part of the firm today. The Question ‘How can we help you?’ remains the cornerstone of the Thomas Dunton philosophy.
