The number of people living alone has risen by nearly 10% in the last decade, new figures from the ONS show, with divorce cited as a key factor. By far the largest increase in solo living in the past decade was among those aged 50 and over. However, the figures do not necessarily indicate that a large proportion of men and women living alone are actually single. The data reinforces a trend identified by law firms of many individuals who had been through divorces being unwilling to formalise new relationships by sharing a home with someone.
