Figures from the Home Office show that over 2 million speeding tickets were handed out last year. This is a rise of 2.4% on 2016 figures and has increased from 1.5million since 2011. Most motorists are caught on an automated camera, with 96% of fines being generated from speed cameras.

Incidentally, Alison Hernandez, the road safety lead for Police and Crime Commissioners, is also lobbying ministers to increase penalty charge notices for motorists caught speeding from £100 to as much as £130.
