Analysis of Office of National Statistics and family court data has shown a rise in the adoption of children by single parents. Figures for 2018 showed that 962 children were adopted by single parents, an increase of 58 on the previous year.
The research was carried out by Wilsons, a private client law firm. The increase has been termed the Jolie effect, after Angelina Jolie, who has adopted two sons and a daughter. It is encouraging to see that the family courts are now recognising that the traditional family unit has changed, and the two parent, two children model is now just one of many variations of what we affectionately term ‘family’.
