As of the 1st June, the Tenant’s Fees Act means that landlords and letting agents can no longer charge for additional fees when tenants are renting privately. We are a nation of renters, with an estimated 4.5 million privately rented households in England. It means that fees for contracts, renewal contracts, viewing fees and credit checks will be scrapped.
It is believed that it will save tenants £240 million a year.
Also landlords will only be allowed to ask for a deposit of up to 5 weeks’ rent. The law is already in effect in Scotland.
