The housing secretary Robert Jenrick has commented that inheritance tax is ‘unfair’ as people are being taxed twice when property is passed to children and grandchildren. This comment follows Chancellor Sajid Javid’s suggestions that he is considering scrapping the inheritance tax.
The tax was originally designed as a taxation of the rich, but since property prices have increased it now affects more families. The percentage of estates now eligible for inheritance tax has risen by 15% in 2016/17 from HMRC figures compared with the previous year.
