The Supreme Court has begun hearing the case of a plumber who claims he was dismissed for wanting to go part time. Gary Smith claimed that he was dismissed from his role with Pimlico after asking to reduce his hours following a heart attack. He has already won a number of rulings that determined he could claim “worker” status, despite being described as self-employed in his contract. The case could decide future employment rights for workers who are part of the so-called “gig” economy.
